LINEOLATED
(Bolborhynchus lineola lineola) are native the southern part of Mexico and the western range of Panama. Barred Parakeet (Bolborhynchus lineola tigrinus) are native to the Andes region from the northwestern region of Venezuela which includes Tachira, Merida, and Distrito Federal, Columbia, the northwestern region of Ecuador to the central area of Peru. They inhabit the open forest areas as well as both the cleared forests and the savannah that have trees. They are seen in the cloud forests of the sub-tropical zones from around 3,000 to around 6,900 feet. They can sometimes be seen in the cultivated areas. They are seen in small flocks of around 6 to around 30 or so individuals. It is not uncommon to see flocks number over 100 birds in certain areas. In the wild they love the tall trees. When in these tall trees they can not be seen or heard from the ground, which sometimes makes observing them difficult. Though linnies are not very well known, but they make wonderful pets. They are very pleasant birds that are excellent around children and families. They are quiet, energetic, love human interaction of any kind, and yes, they can talk. Their chirps are soft, and are not loud or continuous. Linnies love everyone. They are intelliegent, rarely aggressive and would love to be with a human companion all day if possible. It doesn't seem to matter who that human is as long as they are with someone. While great with children, young children still need to be supervised around them to make sure that the child doesn't hurt the bird. Males as well as females are capable of talking, sometimes as young as 12 weeks old. Their voices are child-like and soft. People are often amazed at the talking ability of such a small bird. They enjoy striping the bark from natural branches that are safe, such as the apple tree branches. They love to climb so set up a network of branches in their cages and provide ladders. They are very acrobatic. They seen to prefer being upside down instead of right side up. When they stop to look at something it is not unusual for them to turn upside down as they examine it. They enjoy swings and acrylic rings they can climb on. They also like soft wood toys to chew and large cardboard tubes to climb into and chew on. Linnies will sleep in little huts but this can sometimes cause aggression and nesting behavior so you may want to provide them with a high perch to sleep on. When choosing a cage a good choice would be one that is longer than higher. Choose one that is a minimum of 24x30x 24. They are a high energy bird and need to play and keep themselves busy. Make sure you provide plenty of toys for them and lots of perches. Have different feeding stations at different levels for them to go to. They are around 6 inches in length and weigh around 50 grams. |
